Sounders Beat Rapids 4-1 Behind Clint Dempsey’s Brace
By Cody Maggard
Clint Dempsey could be in the best form of his career right now, yes I said it, the best form of his career.
Dempsey, who is captain for both Seattle and the USMNT, scored twice on Saturday to bring his total goals scored to 8 on the year, oh and he also garnered another assist. That makes 3 of those.
At the end of the first half, Dempsey played a ball across the box to a streaking Lamar Neagle to give Seattle a 1-0 lead going into the locker room. Dempsey picked up where he left off shortly into the second half, as he scored off of a rebound to give Seattle a 2-0 lead. (The pass to set up the shot was quite stunning as well) Just 5 minutes later Dempsey struck once more, this time from a Chad Marshall corner kick. His header found the corner of the net to give the Sounders a comfortable 3-0 lead in front of the home fans.
Colorado did their best to make it interesting down the stretch. A goal in the 62nd minute from Dillon Serna made the score 3-1 in favor of the Sounders, but it was as close as they would get. In the 75th minute Seattle put a 4th on the board, by way of Obafemi Martins. He made a great move to cut past a defender and rifled a curling shot home from just left of the penalty spot.
Seattle are now 5-2-1 and sit 2nd in the Western Conference, meanwhile Colorado fall to 4th in the West with a record of 3-2-2. The Sounders will entertain Philadelphia next Saturday, and the Rapids will look to bounce back when they face LA at home on the same day.
Seattle lineup (4-4-2 diamond): Frei; Yedlin; Marshall; Traore; Remick; Neagle; Alonso; Pineda; Pappa; Dempsey; Martins
Colorado lineup (4-2-3-1): Irwin; Piermayr; O’Neill; Moor; Klute; Sturgis; Martin-Bejara; Serna; LaBrocca; Torres; Buddle
Man of the Match: Clint Dempsey
Not a doubt on who the Man of the Match would be. Dempsey kept up his hot streak and is playing the best soccer he’s ever played in a Sounders jersey. This equates to a very dangerous Sounders side.
