The San Francisco 49ers had a pretty big decision on their hands this offseason when it came to picking up the fifth year option on Aldon Smith. That little bomb scare incident at LAX didn’t help anything and cast even more doubt over the future of Smith with the Niners.

But the decision on whether or not to pick up that fifth year of Smith’s rookie contract has been decided upon and the team has announced they’re picking up the option in what amounts to a no-brainer situation.

The Niners really lose nothing in picking up Smith’s option as he can still get jettisoned if he acts up or violates whatever last chance San Francisco seems to be allowing him. It’s clear that Smith need help of some kind and by picking up his fifth year option, the Niners are at least giving him time to find that help one last time before making a final decision to part ways.
