Fantasy Baseball Stats: Daily All-Stars from May 3

We had some awfully impressive pitching performances Saturday, with only one hitter earning a spot on today’s fantasy baseball stats recap.
For the second day in a row, we start with a member of the defending champs.

Jon Lester — Boston Red Sox

How do you make a good, just not great start to the season all of a sudden look great? A game like this is a good way to start.
As we’ll soon see, there were some very good pitching performances Saturday, and a few that didn’t even make the cut. But the best performance from Saturday — hitter or pitcher — belonged to Lester, and it wasn’t terribly close.
Daily Honorable Mentions
1. Brandon McCarthy — Arizona Diamondbacks

Unfortunately, McCarthy hasn’t had a great start to the season, so this outing didn’t help many fantasy players out there. Still, that doesn’t diminish how strong of an outing it was.
Something else worth noting: In his last three starts (19 innings), McCarthy has 24 strikeouts, a 1.42 ERA, and a 1.10 WHIP. Definitely something to remember if you’re looking to stream and you see McCarthy against a less than stellar offensive team.
2. Joe Mauer — Minnesota Twins

Again, there were some good pitching performances from Saturday that didn’t quite make today’s cut, so it took a pretty solid offensive effort to crack the list. Mauer’s game was stellar, and exactly what you look for from a solid veteran.
Mauer is about as steady in the stats he controls as anyone in the game. When the guys in front of Mauer are getting on base and the guys behind him are hitting, he’s not a guy you want to be going against.
3. Justin Masterson — Cleveland Indians

Johnny Cueto and Julio Teheran just missed this, allowing a few too many earned runs. It’s important to remember that this outing came against an offense that’s gotta be pretty confident right now. Just an overall solid performance.
Masterson has been hit or miss this year and that’s not going to produce good numbers in the early part of the season. Still, another outing or two like this and fantasy owners should begin to feel confident again.
