Microsoft unveils Surface Pro 3

Microsoft has unveiled its long-awaited Surface Pro 3 tablet at a press event in New York City on Tuesday morning. The new hybrid tablet will start at $799, and go on sale to the public on Wednesday.

“This is the tablet that can replace your laptop,” Microsoft spokesperson Panos Panay said during the event. “We designed it in thinness around every corner. This is faster than the Surface Pro 2 you’ve loved to date and is much thinner.”

The lowest-priced device — the $799 model — will come with an Intel i3 processor. Versions of the device with i5 and i7 processors will also be available for purchase.

The Surface Pro 3, which comes less than a year after the Surface Pro 2 was released by Microsoft, comes with a kickstand for easy mounting, a larger 12-inch screen and measures at just 9.1mm thick.

Microsoft claims that it is the “thinnest Intel Core product ever made”.

The company is targeting not only tablet users, but MacBook Air owners as well. The Surface Pro 3 aims to be the device that Microsoft hopes eliminates confusion when trying to decide whether or not to buy a tablet or traditional laptop.

“It doesn’t matter what store you walk into, the conflict exist,” Panay said. “What am I supposed to buy?  The response is ‘what is it you want to do?’ You’ve been told you need a tablet, but you know you need a laptop.”

He continued: “Today, we are taking this conflict away from people,” he said. “It would still have to be thin and light … it would have to be sexy, feel good … all in one package … and maybe a little bigger.

The tablet will also come with an improved keyboard and trackpad to allow easier use when setting the device on your lap. The new keyboard aims to reduce the movement and shaking that occurs when typing on your lap.

Adobe, which was also present at the event, announced that an optimized version of it’s photo editing program Photoshop will see a release for the Surface Pro 3.
