Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are set to square off in the Champions League final on Saturday afternoon. This game might not be the most appealing on the international or European Stage because it features not only two teams from the same domestic league, but two teams from the same city. For Real Madrid, they will be without Xabi Alonso who is suspended following his booking in the semi-final second leg.

It also pits two teams who have been dominant throughout the tournament against one another. Real Madrid are the tournament’s top scorers with 37 goals, a record for the current format (with a maximum of 13 games). Superstar, and reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or Winner, Cristiano Ronaldo has accounted for nearly half of them with 16 goals of his own, also a tournament record.

Atlético will be some tough competition, they’re still unbeaten in the competition and have conceded just six goals in 12 games. If they were to win the Final, they’d be the seventh undefeated side to life the Champions League trophy. Most recently Manchester United achieved the feat in 2007 after also defeating a domestic league opponent, Chelsea FC.

The two sides are riding different waves of momentum into the game as well. Atletico Madrid won their 10th Spanish championship and their first since 1996. They achieved the feat despite not winning any of their last three games. Their final two games were draws against Malaga, and on the last day of the season against FC Barcelona, who were also competing for the title.

Since booking their ticket to the Champions League final, Real Madrid struggled in their domestic league as well, winning just one of their final four matches. They also had two draws and just one loss, finishing the season in third place, three points behind Atletico.

Both teams are dealing with injury concerns heading into the final. For Real Madrid there were initially concerns regarding Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, but both have been cleared to play. Against Espanyol Ronaldo was set to feature, but withdrew during the pre-match warm-up with a reported hamstring strain. The real injury concerns for Real are Pepe and Karim Benzema. Pepe missed the last two games with a left calf injury and Karim Benzema suffered a muscle strain setting up a goal against Espanyol last Saturday.

Atletico Madrid’s goal scoring threat Diego Costa also is in doubt for the final, as well as Turkish midfielder Arda Turan. Costa is highly coveted heading into the summer transfer window and is reportedly set to leave for Chelsea FC. Costa has scored 27 goals in La Liga this season, and left the season finale against Barcelona after just 16 minutes with a right hamstring injury, reportedly a grade one tear. He has been undergoing horse placenta treatment to be in a position to contribute in the big game. Turan left the same game shortly after Costa with a pelvis injury.

Atletico Madrid do get Gabi back after serving a one-match ban in the semi-final second leg.
