Yovani Gallardo feels ready to go, but his team would really rather not push it.

After leaving Tuesday’s start with a sprained ankle, Gallardo missed a bullpen session and threw off of flat ground Friday. Christine De Nicola of MLB.com reports that Gallardo will not be making the start on Sunday afternoon against the Miami Marlins. As manager Ron Roenicke says, on top of the slight stiffness Gallardo experiences while doing non-pitching activities like running , it’s more of a precaution than a worry.

"We’re in trouble getting through that game and the next day and the day after. That’s probably the biggest concern. I think he’s at a point where I’m not so worried about his arm as much. I think he’ll land well with the ankle and he won’t alter how he’s pitching according to how his bullpen went today, but it’s the other stuff not being able to complete in a game. That has me concerned."

Starting in Gallardo’s place is Triple-A call-up Jimmy Nelson. Nelson saw time with the club as a September call-up when rosters expanded, posting a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings. So far in Triple-A, he has a 5-1 record and a 1.71 ERA in 9 starts. Unless Gallardo suffers a setback, it’s likely this is a one-start appearance for the 24-year old. A corresponding roster move will have to be made before his start.
