It was announced on Twitter by the team’s official handle that both right-handed pitchers’ Billy Buckner and Blaine Boyer were designated for assignment.
Boyer worked two scoreless innings during his first Major League relief appearance since 2011. It took him several years to get back up to the big leagues but he’s shown some signs of improvement.
Buckner made a spot start against the Chicago Cubs and didn’t do all that bad.
With Buckner and Boyer being designated for assignment, the Padres have recalled utility man Tommy Medica from Triple-A El Paso. Medica is hitting a weak .161/.212/.290 with one home run and two RBIs off five hits so far this season.
He was on the Opening Day roster with the Padres when they opened up against the Cleveland Indians on March 30.
San Diego gave him the start in left field but he was optioned a month later after appearing in just 14 games. His time with the Triple-A affiliate was short lived after the Padres placed Jedd Gyorko on the paternity list just three days after he was optioned to El Paso.
Medica will be available for today’s weekend series finale against the North Siders but will more than likely come off the bench.
