The Washington Redskins named Bruce Allen as the team’s president in addition to his preexisting duties as general manager, the team announced on Monday.

More from NFL

Allen was hired in 2009 as the team’s general manager after executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato resigned and hired Mike Shanahan as the team’s head coach to replace the fired Jim Zorn and was also given the title of executive vice president. Shanahan and Allen shared general managing duties with the head coach having final say over personnel.

“I think the world of Bruce Allen and giving him both titles is appropriate,” owner Dan Snyder said.

Following the end of the 2013 season that saw the Redskins go 3-13, Allen fired Shanahan and assumed full control over the roster and football operations and hired former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden as the team’s head coach.

It remains to be seen just how much Allen’s day-to-day responsibilities will change with the added title, but as the old saying goes, “with more power comes more responsibility.”

He undoubtedly will be faced with questions about the franchise’s controversial nickname, which he has said has a “deep and purposeful meaning” as well as getting Robert Griffin III back to the form he displayed as a rookie and getting the team back to the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

Allen is the son of former Washington head coach George Allen and has previously worked as the general manager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004-2008 and was a senior executive for the Oakland Raiders from 1996-2003.
