Carmelo Anthony is set to become a free agent if he opts out of his deal this summer, which he more than likely will be doing in order to sign what could be his last max extension. According to New York Post, Anthony met with his representatives on Friday night in order to discuss his available options.

New York Post has the following:

"Carmelo Anthony staged a dinner meeting with his entourage Friday night to discuss his free-agent future, according to a source familiar with the situation.Anthony, his Creative Artists Agency agent Leon Rose, and CAA adviser William Wesley were in the group of six at a well-known haunt on 28th Street called Pergola in a strategy session discussing their options. The source said the group sat in a private back room.Anthony has kept an extremely low profile since the regular season ended in mid-April, unlike past offseasons."

Phil Jackson, who not too long ago took over the Knicks as the team’s president, will face his first tricky task in trying to convince Anthony to stay in New York.

Even though Anthony is eligible to sign a max five-year deal worth just under $130 million, Jackson has suggested that he will try to negotiate with his superstar to make him take a salary cut. This is simply so that the team would have more flexibility to build around him in the years to come.

However, Jackson still needs to find a head coach for the team, and considering the poor season the Knicks have had, Anthony will likely consider his options.

The Chicago Bulls and the Houston Rockets have been connected to the Knicks’ superstar, but would need to shed a lot of salary to actually be able to give him a legitimate contract offer.
