The Grizzlies advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2013, losing to the San Antonio Spurs, a new high for the once struggling franchise, but decided to part ways with head coach Lionel Hollins because of problems in the front office. The Grizzlies tabbed assistant coach Dave Joerger to replace Hollins.
Although the Grizzlies were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Clippers in seven games, it was a very good season for Joerger and his club. He fought through several injuries, including the loss of the 2012-2013 Defensive Player of the Year, center Marc Gasol for 23 games, and still managed to win 50 games in the ultra-competitive Western Conference.
It looked like the Minnesota Timberwolves were about to steal Joerger away from the Grizzlies, but Joerger instead decided to remain with the Grizzlies and has now agreed to a two-year contract extension.
Joerger’ Grizzlies were 50-32 last season.
