There seems to be a very interesting situation brewing in Cleveland where the Cavaliers are trying to do the one thing that ensures they’ll be terrible forever and are burning their best player because — well, they have no real good reason.

According to Bob Finnan of The Morning Journal, the Cavaliers are not totally convinced that Irving is deserving of a max contract which yet again throws his future with the team into serious doubt.

"Many are worried Irving will bolt the first chance he gets. This would have been a vehicle to lock him up for possibly an additional five years. Scuttlebutt around the league about the reason they wouldn’t make the offer is two-fold. First, the Cavs are not convinced he’s truly a max player. In my opinion, I don’t think he is. I think he’s a fabulous talent who falls just short of being a max player. His teams have yet to sniff the playoffs."

If the Cavaliers want a crystal ball to look into the future to see how all of this will play out they should just look west to Minnesota and what happened when the Timberwolves failed to give Kevin Love a max contract because they didn’t think he was deserving. Love is now the best power forward in basketball and will soon be burning the Wolves bad when he opts out next summer, middle finger in the air as he rides to greener pastures.

The same scenario seems to be brewing Cleveland, as the team needs to realize it’s not a destination and showing a lack of interest in your star player and the only reason anyone knows who you are is a bad strategy.

But the Cavs haven’t been known for being geniuses so this can’t really be all that surprising that yet another ‘era’  in the franchise is blowing up in their face.
