This shutout runs Alvarez’s scoreless innings streak to 19, and consecutive innings without an earned run to 21. He has not given up an earned run since the Giants plated two in the sixth inning against him all the way back on May 16th.
Alvarez needed just 88 pitches in shutting out the Rays tonight. This is his third shutout of the season already, giving him the major league lead.
Alvarez really burst on the scene when he threw a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers in his final start of last season.
Chris Archer pitched a gem for the Rays in a losing effort. Archer actually allowed less hits than Alvarez. He gave up only five hits through seven while striking out eight. He also walked two batters.
It was one of those two walks that ended up costing Archer the game. He walked Christian Yelich with the bases loaded in the fifth inning after allowing three singles in the inning.
This continues the tailspin for the Rays. They have now lost eight straight games, and have scored just six runs in the last six games. The Rays will look to get off the skids against the Marlins tomorrow.
The Marlins will send right hander Tom Koehler to the mound. Koehler is 4-5 with a 3.18 ERA on the season. All Star David Price will take the mound for the Rays.
