After one of the most highly-publicized searches of the offseason, the New York Knicks hired Derek Fisher as the team’s next head coach not too long after his playing career officially came to an end over a week ago when the Oklahoma City Thunder were knocked out of the Western Conference playoffs by the San Antonio Spurs.

More from NBA

The move, while criticized by some, isn’t all that shocking given the fact that new president Phil Jackson was in search of someone to implement his system, and there are few players alive that know said system better than Fisher.

On Tuesday, the team officially made the announcement of Fisher taking over at an introductory press conference, and although his coaching resume is blank, the five-time NBA champion seems pretty confident.

“There will be a lot of talk about my inexperience as a head coach, and that is obviously factually true,” Fisher said in the presser. “I have never been a head coach in the NBA or in college or in high school — but I am experienced. Basketball is a game that I am experienced in. Playing, understanding, leading in, guiding in, helping another group achieve the greatest gift in the world as a professional athlete and that is being a champion. That I have experience in. And that’s the experience I plan on sharing with these players, sharing with this organization.”

This should be a fun journey to watch going forward, especially if this hire can somehow lure Carmelo Anthony to stay with the team as well as whether or not the team can get some top-notch talent to come in and play with him.
