With the arrival of Gregory Polanco from the minor leagues this week, they now have him to go along with Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte, and a guy who’s no slouch as a third/fourth outfielder in Josh Harrison.

As the Pirates try to keep the positive momentum going against their divisional foe in the Chicago Cubs, it is Marte who came up with the impressive diving catch  in left field to rob Darwin Barney of a hit.

Besides the excitement of having these guys in the outfield, their ability to track down balls in the gaps stands to be a huge boost for a Pirates team that sometimes struggles to score runs. In recent seasons we have been reminded again and again of the importance of run prevention. The Pirates can do quite a bit of that with these guys roaming the outfield.

As for Marte, he has had a stop and start 2014 season thus far. His offensive struggles have even prompted the suggestion that he might be demoted to Triple-A, that after signing a long-term extension this off-season. Marte’s bat has heated up lately. Thankfully for him, he has been able to keep up his contributions in the field while he has tried to get his swing on track.

Here is the video of Marte’s diving catch on Thursday night:
