But not everyone is fit to be around long term and the Celtics may end up moving some pretty big names before the offseason is over and done with. One name that consistently pops up in trade rumors and has done so for the better part of the last two years, is point guard Rajon Rondo.
According to Steve Kyler from Basketball Insiders, the Boston Celtics may not move Rondo before, during or after the draft but it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing ever if they did.
"The Celtics continue to say that Rondo is part of their long-term and that they are building around him.As for rumors… there have been plenty, namely involving Kevin Love, but they don’t have the assets to really make noise on draft day. They are likely using the 6th pick and they will look at moves in July.I wouldn’t be shocked if Rondo were moved, but I am not expecting."
Trading Rondo is something we’ve been hearing about for months and even years, and it hasn’t happened. But he’s running out of years on his contract with the Celtics and they could end up trading him now that the timing is right.
Still, Rondo is a superstar and the Celtics would be without an identity if they traded him. That may be what is needed for this new era, but for now it’s looking like Rondo isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
