RIP Dick Enberg’s monitor. The veteran broadcaster was a helpless witness Monday night as a Seth Smith foul ball destroyed a piece of broadcast booth equipment right in front of him. There was nothing Enberg could do but watch in horror as the baseball did its cruel work. You can hear the sickening leather-on-plastic crunch early in the video. Once you hear that sound, you can never forget it.

More from MLB

Dick handles it with professionalism but you know he must’ve been pretty upset. That monitor died right in front of him. Think about it for a second. One second the monitor is sitting there, merrily doing its job, and the next second it’s all cracked and broken and useless. Amazing show of composure by Dick Enberg. A younger man probably would have lost it but Dick has centuries of experience behind him. Not to mention the sedatives.

It’s been a tough year for booth equipment overall. First that Reds beat writer had his laptop taken out and now this. When will the carnage end?

The Padres are taking donations for the monitor’s family. If you want to give…I don’t know, just call the Padres and find out. I’m sure their PR department has all the information. Give them a buzz, see what they say.
