On Monday Carmelo Anthony officially informed the New York Knicks that he would be opting out of his deal, meaning that he will indeed test the free agency waters this summer, as we all expected he would. Whenever there is a lucrative free agent on the market, of course one of the very first teams brought up as a potential landing spot is the Los Angeles Lakers.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

Since the rumors started swirling heavily, months ago, that Anthony would be seriously considering leaving New York, the Lakers have been brought up in a few conversations.

However, as Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk mentioned on Monday, while a move out to Los Angeles isn’t completely out of the picture, it’s highly unlikely, especially considering that Anthony wants to win a title sooner rather than later, and the Lakers aren’t all that high on bringing him in to begin with.

Naturally, yes, the thought of Anthony heading out to play in purple and gold alongside a returning Kobe Bryant, plus a top 10 draft pick, is intriguing; but that team still wouldn’t be built to win a title immediately like some of his other potential destinations would be.

It’s going to be a fun summer as we watch where Anthony does ultimately end up when this free agent process is complete, but unless both sides miraculously warm up to one another, you can all but rule the Lakers out of this one.
