Zach Randolph, Memphis Grizzlies agree to two-year, $20 million extension

With power forward Zach Randolph holding a a player option worth $16.5 million for the 2014-2015 season, few predicted him to move on from the Memphis Grizzlies.

Even if Randolph decided to opt out of the deal, most figured it would be just to sign a longer deal and have more insurance for the future.

Although Randolph and the Grizzlies have both stated their desire to remain together on many different occasions, talks between the two hit a stall in recent days.

Apparently, that stall is over.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, after exercising that player option, Randolph has agreed to a two-year deal worth $20 million.

There was some talk the Grizzlies could let Randolph go and fill his role by signing free agent power forward Pau Gasol, the brother of Grizzlies’ center Marc Gasol, away from the Los Angeles, but bringing back Randolph was clearly their top option. Marc Gasol is a solid offensive player and provides a fantastic defensive presence (he was the 2012-2013 Defensive Player of the Year). With Randolph’s offensive prowess, they have proved to be a good fit together and are the biggest reasons the Grizzlies have had so much success recently.

Randolph averaged 17.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from the floor and 74.2% from the charity stripe.
