Peter Hanson made an ace on the 222-yard par-3 second hole in the third round at the Quicken Loans National. During the broadcast, Nick Faldo said the hole is one of the hardest at Congressional, but that didn’t stop Hanson’s ball from rolling into the cup for a one.

After watching this clip, I must reiterate my stance that “every golf tournament should have a stadium hole.” Hanson’s hole-in-one was great, but it would have been amazing if there were thousands of people there ready to go nuts after seeing the best shot of their lives.
I would even suggest creating par-3s that are more player friendly by shortening the hole and cutting accessible hole locations. The 16th hole at the Waste Management Phoenix Open is roughly 165 yards, which allows the players to look good by shooting for the pin.
Fans want to see great shots, and the easier the hole, the better the shots are going to be.
Another idea would be to specially construct greens that create a “funnel” effect to the hole. The 17th at TPC Sawgrass is like this when the hole is cut in the front, and the players are able to spin the ball back off the slope. It doesn’t guarantee a hole-in-one, but it increases the chances.
Who is with me? It is time to start making golf exciting for the average sports fan. The 16th hole at the Waste Management and the 17th hole at The Players should be used as models for creating the atmosphere we all want to see.
