With the New York Knicks likely to re-sign forward Carmelo Anthony, teams are looking for their “Plan B” options. For the Dallas Mavericks that was Chandler Parsons of the Houston Rockets and for the Chicago Bulls, they’ve set their sights on Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol.

The Bulls believe they are a “leading candidate” to land Gasol if they don’t land Anthony, according to Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun Times who cites a source:

"According to a source, the Bulls feel that if Anthony goes elsewhere, they are one of the leading candidates to land free-agent big man Pau Gasol — unless Anthony happens to choose the Los Angeles Lakers, which could start the dominos falling and convince Gasol to re-sign with the Lakers."

Getting Gasol won’t be any easier than getting Anthony though, and the Bulls could have some serious competition for Gasol. The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly interested in Pau Gasol according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, and they’re apparently very persistent.

If you’re Gasol, the Spurs as a franchise might be more appealing than the Bulls. The Spurs are coming off their fifth NBA Championship and second consecutive NBA Finals appearance. The Bulls are a talented team but their star has struggled with injuries as of late and makes joining the Bulls a risky proposition.

And don’t forget Gasol could return to the Lakers.
