The reigning National Player of the Year was the fifth-oldest player taken in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft. Chicago took him at No. 11, and although he fulfills Chicago’s two greatest needs—effective scoring and efficient shooting—many had serious issues with the limitations of his height, size, and strength.
McDermott comes from a team that quite literally died when he didn’t shoulder the offensive burden. If there’s one thing Chicago knew coming into summer league, it was that he’s willing and able to create shots.
The No. 5 all-time leading scorer in Division I history has been the running mate of second-year Chicago Bull, Tony Snell. Chicago’s tandem are two of the top 12 scorers in Las Vegas. But it hasn’t just been McDermott’s offensive game; his defensive abilities have been remarkably good throughout.
