WWE Battleground results 2014, live blog (July 20, 2014): Live coverage in progress

facebooktwitterreddit

Although there are a lot of folks already looking ahead to August and Summerslam, as they do every year, we first have to get one more pay-per-view in this Sunday as WWE Battleground will take place live from the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Sunday night.

More from WWE

Of course, some of what comes out of this show will undoubtedly lead into what happens at Summerslam out in Los Angeles last month, so there is indeed reason to watch either live on the WWE Network or through your local provider.

With the go home show happening on Friday night with Smackdown, the match card for the event is now complete, and here’s a look at all the action that you will be seeing on Sunday night.

  • John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton vs. Kane (WWE World Heavyweight Championship
  • Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose
  • Intercontinental championship battle royal
  • AJ Lee vs. Paige (WWE Diva’s Championship)
  • The Usos vs. Rowan and Harper (WWE Tag Team Championships)
  • Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt
  • Rusev vs. Jack Swagger
  • Cameron vs. Naomi

Some have said that this card is weak, while others are looking forward to it. But again, a lot of what happens from this show could affect what happens at Summerslam.

There has been a lot of chatter recently that John Cena will not walk out with the WWE championship when all is said and done now. He’s been removed from the RAW advertisement on Monday night, further fueling the speculation.

Whatever the case may be, something is bound to give on Sunday night, and you can follow along with the coverage here at FanSided throughout the evening. Just check back here at 8 PM ET, and in the meantime, get the conversation stared in the comments section below.

WWE Battleground:

Fandango vs. Adam Rose (Kickoff Show)

To get things started at Battleground on Sunday night, we get a match that was announced just hours before the show was to go on the air as Fandango will take on Adam Rose. Fandango is out first on the Kickoff Show. Next up, Rose makes his way to the ring with his crowd, AND Layla and Summer Rae because of course.

Right off the bat, Fandango attacks Rose in the corner after the bell and hits a suplex in the middle of the ring but only gets a two count. Outside the ring, Layla and Summer Rae are leading the parade around the ring. He goes outside and gets slapped by both of the ladies.

Rose goes outside and tosses him back inside and starts going to work, finishing up with a spine buster. He then hits his finisher for the easy win and everyone parties on the outside.

Winner: Adam Rose

Well that was a bit unnecessary to say the least. But again, this was done for no other reason than to further the stroyline with the ladies, and that’s pretty much it.

Where this goes from here, we don’t really know–but I’m sure we’ll find out sooner or later.

Cameron vs. Naomi

Cameron is out first for this one with that all-new theme music and dressed somewhat like a school girl. Next out is Naomi to a pretty nice pop from the crowd, in all honesty.

Naomi gets right in the ring and starts attacking. But Cameron quickly turns the tables and starts to take the offense to Naomi following a kick to the midsection. She eventually tosses her to the outside and slams her into the apron before tossing her back into the ring.

Back in the ring she goes for a cover, but Naomi kicks out. Cameron locks in a submission move, but Naomi won’t quit. After the hold is broken, Naomi is able to hit a nice reversal and then starts unloading on Cameron in the middle of the ring.

She comes off the ropes and starts attacking even more after a Thesz press. They take the fight to the outside once again with Naomi beating camera halfway up the aisle. She gets her back into the ring.

Naomi goes to toss her over the top but Cameron counters and drapes her throat off the rope. She then hits a schoolboy roll up for the win.

Winner: Cameron

The Usos vs. Erick Rowan and Luke Harper ( WWE Tag Team Championship, 2-out-of-3 Falls)

The Usos are out to the ring first with their usual entrance, followed by the Wyatt Family with their amazing turn to a pretty loud pop from the folks live in attendance.

Before the action gets underway, there’s a loud “LET’S GO WYATTS” chant.

Erick Rowan and Jey Uso start things off as Jey slaps Rowan in the face, but he quickly starts to pay for that as Rowan gets to work. Harper is quickly tagged into the match.

Eventually, the Usos get into control and get both Harper and Rowan to the outside where they regroup. Harper gets back into the ring and starts working on Jey in the corner. After some more offense from Harper, he tags Rowan back into the match who continues the onslaught in the middle of the ring.

After some more beatdowns, Jey finally gets the tag toe Jimmy who comes right in and eats a boot from Harper who gets the pin.

1st Fall: Wyatts

Right after the second fall gets underway Harper gets right back to work and eventually gets Rowan back into the ring. After a near fall, Rowan tags Harper right back into the mix.

Jimmy starts to fight back against Harper, but he can’t get much going as Harper keeps going to work.

Out of nowhere, Jimmy gets a roll up to even things up.

2nd Fall: Usos

The Wyatts quickly attack after they lose the fall and the referee finally gets control. Rowan hits a fall away slam on Jimmy but can only get a two count.

Jimmy finally gets the hot tag to Jey who comes in and starts cleaning house.

After some more back and forth, Jimmy is back in the ring and he gets two near falls on Harper, unable to put him away. Harper hits an amazing suicide dive onto the outside.

This match then gets all sorts of crazy with back and forth near falls from both teams. At one point, Rowan hits an amazing double suplex off the top rope.

The Usos hit a double splash on Harper to get the win.

Winner: The Usos

That was undoubtedly one of the best tag team matches in a long, long time.

Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose

Before this match gets underway, they show an amazing video package chronicling this feud. Beautifully done once again by the WWE video people.

Backstage, Rollins cuts a quick promo about putting the dagger into Ambrose. Before he can get done with the promo, Ambrose attacks him backstage and the officials have to pull him away. Triple H then kicks Dean Ambrose out of the building.

Well now it seems as if we have a little problem on our hands here. There will be no match between Ambrose and Rollins that we were all looking forward to for the past few weeks.

However, you would have to think that Ambrose will be back later in the night to screw up a potential cash-in attempt by Rollins. In the promo, Rollins was saying that we very well might be looking at the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Also, after Triple H kicked Ambrose out of the building, he said, multiple times, that he did not want Ambrose screwing up any of the plans for the night, foreshadowing the cash in attempt.

This was actually pretty smart booking using Ambrose, because once again, they’re making us guess what is going to happen.

We’ll see what happens as the night goes on.

Paige vs. AJ Lee (Diva’s Championship)

AJ Lee gets the win

Jack Swagger vs. Rusev Out first is Rusev with Lana as he flies the Russian flag. Lana then gets on the mic and tells the fans to shut up. She says that the Americans and the propaganda machine should be scolded for our war crimes. We should be insulted and afraid. We should be ashamed of ourselves. They show the Putin picture and she says that Rusev will crush Swagger. Rusev gets back in the ring and the bell rings. Swagger immediately goes for the ankle lock but he can’t get it locked in. Rusev hauls it back to the outside. Back in the ring, Rusev starts to take it to Swagger with kicks and ramming him into the corner. He continues the onslaught with right hands. Out of the corner, Swagger almost gets the ankle lock again but Rusev gets away once again. Swagger heads right to the outside to grab him. He gets him back into the ring, but Rusev turns the tables pretty quickly. After some more kicks up against the ropes, Rusev locks in the claw on the shoulder of Swagger. He continues with some heavy punishment in the middle of the ring. Eventually, Swagger gains some momentum back and starts bringing the heat to Rusev with a huge tackle and a boot. He hits the Swagger Bomb, but only gets a two count. Swagger locks in the Patriot Lock, but Rusev is able to get to the ropes and then to the outside. Swagger heads outside and locks it in again. He’s able to launch Swagger into the post though, and Swagger gets count out. Winner: Rusev Seth Rollins makes his way down to the ring and says that he wants to be announced the winner of his match via forfeit after Ambrose gets kicked out of the building. Justin Roberts announces him as the winner. As he’s making his way up the ramp, Ambrose comes out of nowhere and attacks. He smashes Rollins right off of the Spanish announce table before security comes out and grabs him to take him away. He escapes and gets back at Rollins before they grab him again. Triple H even comes out to help separate them.

Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt
Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho

Bray Wyatt is out first for this one with a loud pop, followed by Jericho to an equally as loud pop. This one should be fun to watch play out, but we knew that already.

They start the match by circling one another before they finally lock up with Jericho taking it to the corner. They back off and lock up again, this time with Wyatt coming out on top and getting the offense in. Jericho gets in some chops, but Wyatt laughs him off and drapes him over the ropes.

Jericho gets Wyatt into the corner and lands some more chops, but Wyatt takes over eventually and starts methodically taking Jericho apart.

Eventually Jericho gets the upper hand once again and gets Wyatt to the outside. He then, at his age mind you, goes to the top rope and hits a suicide dive onto all three Wyatt Family members. The referee tosses Harper and Rowan out! Back in the ring, Wyatt is back in control. He starts unloading on Jericho and gets him into the corner. But Jericho fires back with some more offense of his own. After Wyatt goes on an onslaught again, Jericho hits a Codebreaker out of nowhere for the win!

Winner: Chris Jericho
The WWE Intercontinental Championship was being determined by a 20-man battle royal after Bad News Barrett had to vacate it.

The bout started with the usual melee and some wrestlers getting eliminated rather quickly. Then things begin to slow down when more people get eliminated. Great Khalil, Sin Cara, R-Truth, Curtis Axel, Damien Sandow, and Diego were all eliminated rather early.

Sheamus eliminated Ryback with with a brogue kick.

Kofi Kingston was in the match so you’d know there would be some of his usual theatrics to stay in the match, and he was almost eliminated by Cesaro but hung on to Cesaro to pull himself up and get back in the ring.

Dolph Ziggler eliminated Del Rio. The Miz came into the ring and was thrown through the ropes to the mat for the second time, but because he didn’t go over the top rope he wasn’t eliminated.

Kofi was almost eliminated but was caught on the shoulders of Big E Langston, who had been eliminated. Langston helped Kofi get back to the ring and he once again got back into the ring reversing a suplex attempt by Cesaro. Moments later Cesaro lifted Kingston up and over the top rope to eliminate him once for all.

Heath Slater eliminated Cesaro seconds later when his back was turned. Sheamus then eliminated Slater with a Brogue Kick. Sheamus then took hold of Bo Dallas delivering his Chops and when he let go, Dolph Ziggler dropped kicked him off the edge of the mat to eliminate him.

That left Ziggler and Sheamus in the ring, and the Miz who was outside the ring laying down by the announcer’s table. Sheamus picked Ziggler up like he was going to power bomb him over the top rope, but Ziggler reversed it.

Ziggler then kicked Sheamus off the edge of the ring and as he was celebrating, The Miz ran in and threw him over the rope to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Fatal 4-Way

Randy Orton is out first in this one, followed by Kane, then Roman Reigns and, finally, the champ John Cena–who was carrying two belts, which is interesting, considering the rumors that they were retiring the big gold belt.

More from WWE

Cena and Reigns start the match on one side of the ring with Kane and Orton on the other. After the bell rings, Kane and Reigns go at it, with Cena and Orton following suit.

Back in the ring, Reigns starts taking it to Orton, but when he turns around, he eats a right hand from Kane. Orton and Kane start double teaming Reigns in the corner. Cena comes up on the apron, but Kane knocks him back to the floor.

Kane and Orton continue to take it to Reigns in the middle of the ring.

The champ eventually gets back in the ring, but now he is the one taking the punishment from Kane and Orton. They knock Reigns to the outside and Kane bounces him off of the post.

Every time that Orton is in trouble, Kane comes in and makes the save. That should stop soon.

Eventually, as we would all expect, Cena starts to make his comeback against Orton. Kane and Orton begin arguing in the middle of the ring, which causes a distraction.

After a sequence in which Orton has both Reigns and Cena under control, Cena begins to make another comeback, locking Orton in the STF. Orton heads to the ropes, but Reigns grabs him and throws him over the announce table.

Now we have a face off between Reigns and Cena. They exchange blows in the center of the ring. After some more back and forth, Cena goes for the STF but Reigns gets out. Reigns then hits him with a Samoan Drop. He goes for the Superman Punch, but Cena counters. Coming off the ropes, though, he DOES eat the Superman Punch. Reigns then hits the spear, but Kane saves the pin.

Kane and Reigns go at it, and Reigns hits him with the Superman Punch. He goes around the ring and kicks Cena first, then Orton and then Kane. He follows all that up by spearing Orton through the barricade.

Reigns hits the spear on Kane, but Cena comes in to make the save.

There’s a sequence in which Kane, Cena and Reigns trade pinfalls on one another.

We get down to just Kane and Reigns. But Cena comes in and hits the AA on Kane for the win.

Winner: John Cena
