Some big news broke in the NFL world overnight, as Pat Bowlen was forced to step down as owner of the Denver Broncos because of health issues.

More from Denver Broncos

According to multiple reports, Bowlen is dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and must focus on getting his health in order.

The news comes from Mike Klis of the Denver Post, who says that Bowlen is handing ownership of the team over to Broncos president Joe Ellis.

Bowlen has reportedly been dealing with memory loss for nearly half of a decade, and on Tuesday he learned that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

It’s a really, really sad day,” Ellis told the Denver Post. “It’s sad for his family, his wife and his seven children. It’s sad for everyone in the organization. And it’s sad for all the Bronco fans who know what Pat Bowlen meant to them as an owner. It’s a day nobody wanted to see happen.”

While Bowlen has stepped down from his duties as team owner, control of the team will now belong to the Pat Bowlen Trust and there are no plans to sell the team. The hope from Bowlen is that it will remain in the family.

During his 30 year career with the Broncos, Bowlen got to witness six Super Bowl appearances and he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy on two different occasions.
