The New York Mets have placed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled, the team announced Saturday. The contract of pitcher Buddy Carlisle has been purchased from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the open spot on the 25-man roster.

Matsuzaka flew back to New York on Friday to undergo an MRI after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow. Results of that test aren’t clear, but doctors evaluated the injury on Saturday and apparently came away deciding the pitcher could use some rest.

“Dice-K’s elbow was bothering him a little,” Mets manager Terry Collins told the New York Daily News on Friday. “He is in New York getting it examined.”

On Thursday, Matsuzaka pitched out of the bullpen against the Milwaukee Brewers and allowed three runs over two innings. He looked noticeably uncomfortable on the mound during the performance, which included allowing two homers. He had allowed two homers in his previous 55 innings on the mound.

Collins noticed the issues during the game.

“He said when he was loosening up, he’d feel it a little but thought it was nothing that he couldn’t pitch through,” Collins told the Daily News. “Then when he was in the game it was bothering him pretty good.”

It’s generally been a rough month for Matsuzaka. After pitching well out of the bullpen to begin the season, he had mixed results during a brief stint in the rotation before returning to relief work earlier this month. Overall, he’s posted a 5.48 ERA over 21.1 innings in July, so a break on the DL may do him some good.
