There are so many elite cornerbacks in this league. It’s getting hard to count them all. The latest candidate, Cary Williams has proclaimed himself to be in that league of elite corners.

He was Asked if he’d put himself in their echelon, and his answer was simple.

“Yeah,” Williams said, via CSN Philly. “No question.”

The question was prompted by the mega-deals that teams have dished out to the elite corners. He doesn’t care that they got paid — though he noted that they deserve the money. He conjectured that his slow rise in recognition could be related to his draft status.

“I’ve started and haven’t given up a touchdown in any of those playoff games. And my name is never brought up because maybe I’m a seventh-rounder or whatever the case may be,” he said. “I don’t know what it is. It is what it is, because my statistics definitely show I can play this game.

“But at the end of the day it’s not my job to heckle or wonder why I’m not in the top 100 or anything like that. I just play and try to be the best I can possibly be. Those guys are great, those guys are equally as talented and they do what they have to do to get their teams wins.”

Last season, Williams had three interceptions, 12 pass deflections and 57 tackles while playing all 16 regular season games. He also played in one playoff game with the Eagles last year. The six-year veteran has a long way to go before he’s considered elite. But that can change in a matter of a few games.
