The news is nothing really surprising. The 2nd year player replaced Mark Sanchez last season as the teams quarterback and the addition of Michael Vick isn’t going to change that until Smith gives Rex Ryan a reason to. With Smith starting it’s likely that Michael Vick will see plenty of time in the back-up role but as is normal for many NFL teams, Vick will see time with the first team as well.
Smith and Vick headline the Jets quarterback group but the team also wants to get a good luck at their two other signal callers this preseason. The Jets will not likely carry four quarterbacks on their roster so the battle for third could be a tight one between Tajh Boyd and Matt Simms. Boyd is a rookie and Simms is entering his 2nd NFL season.
The Jets have made quite a few changes to their team this year after head coach Rex Ryan survived the hot seat after missing the playoffs. The team signed former Tennessee running back Chris Johnson to a deal and added wide-receiver Eric Decker from the Denver Broncos.
Eyes will be firmly fixed on the Jets problem area, consistency at the quarterback position so it’s good that Smith gets the early looks because fans want to see significant progress from the man who is supposed to be the franchises future.
