Veteran defensive end John Abraham is entering his second season with the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately the off-season leading up to the 2014 campaign has been checkered by Abraham’s DUI arrest last month.

More from Arizona Cardinals

Abraham has been absent from Arizona camp thus far, citing personal reasons. On Friday night he released a statement via the team’s website regarding his DUI arrest:

"“First, I want to apologize to my family and friends, the Cardinals organization, my teammates and the fans for letting them down. I understand the significance of my actions and right now I am taking the necessary steps to handle my personal business.“I am very thankful for the support from my family, friends and especially the Cardinals organization during this time in my life. I am looking forward to being back with my teammates in the near future.”"

What is unclear is how those “necessary steps” will affect Abraham’s status on the field, but good on him for issuing a true apology and addressing the issue at hand.

Having played the first 12 years of his career with the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons, Abraham proved to be a savvy signing for the Cardinals last season. Some questioned how much he had left in the tank at age 35, and all he did was post another double-digit sack season with 11.5 in 16 games played.

There is no shortage of buzz around the Cardinals as they look ahead to the 2014 season. Knowing what is potentially in store, the team will hope to get Abraham right and back on the field soon.
