The season is all but officially over for the once promising New York Giants running back, David Wilson. His career is all but over officially as well. After returning to practice last week following clearance from doctors after his spinal fusion surgery, Wilson suffered a “stinger” and is now being told by the Giants that he is done.

More from New York Giants

Wilson, a former 1st round draft pick in 2012, was to meet with his physicians this morning but lingering concerns within the Giants organization have led to rumors that Wilson, even if cleared, would not return to the field for the team. It’s now being reported by ESPN that the Giants have indeed shut him down.

The Giants played in Sunday nights Hall of Fame game to open the 2014 exhibition season but Wilson did not make the trip. In his absence the Giants fielded a potent rushing attack that was highlighted by rookie 4th round pick Andre Williams’ seven rushes for 48 yards. A 6.9 yard per carry. The team also got production out of free agent pick-up Peyton Hillis who ran seven carries for 36 yards.

Wilson wants to get on the field but he is literally one hit away from paralysis and frankly one hit away from a possible life ending injury. It’s obvious why the Giants are opting to end the players season. The team has not placed the player on injured reserve but it seems to be the direction that the team is heading.

A quick but bruising runner, Wilson was never able to showcase his potential as he battled for playing time his rookie season and then saw his 2013 season end early.
