The Chicago Cubs called up top infield prospect Javier Baez this week. He is already rewarding them in a major way for that decision. Baez has played three big league games, and after his showing on Thursday, he has three home runs to show for it.

More from Chicago Cubs

Some people have observed that the Cubs might have chosen the present moment to promote the young slugger because the opportunity to face the Colorado Rockies in his first big league series would set him up for success. A reasonable response to such a theory would seem to be: well yea…wouldn’t you?

Not to pile on some poor Rockies pitcher who is just doing his best out there, but a match-up against Yohan Flande at Coors Field has to be considered the best option available to instill some confidence in one of the young players on whom your organization is counting in the years to come.

Baez is right-handed and he possesses the coveted ‘hit for power’ tool. To have that tool in the middle of the infield only makes him that much more valuable, as he plays shortstop and second base. There will still be bumps in the road for him as there are for any young player, but early returns are that the future is bright for Baez and the Cubs.
