Cary Williams of the Philadelphia Eagles was not excited about sharing a practice field with the New England Patriots. That inspired some comments from the defensive back calling the Patriots cheaters earlier this month.

With the chance to potentially back off those comments, Williams dug in and stood by what he had said. More time passed, and then somebody finally told Williams that he needs to be sorry for what his comments.

So it was that Williams apologized on Friday after the preseason affair between those two teams. Specifically he apologized to New England head coach Bill Belichick. Williams described the apology, as passed along by Mike Reiss of ESPN.com:

"“I told him I was sorry for the words that I said. That was just out of pure emotion, sometimes you say things without really thinking about them. That was a situation where playing these guys in the playoffs [while Williams was with the Baltimore Ravens], you develop a hate for them and you try to use any type of anything to get your mind on, or get going. In that situation, I could have chosen my words a little bit wiser.“But it’s mutual respect between two men. We were able to come together. I told him that I was sorry and I have nothing but the utmost respect for the organization and him as a GM and a coach.”"

It seems that Williams cannot play the “heat of the moment” card since he stood by his comments two days after he made them. And when he says that he “could have chosen his words a little bit wiser,” that makes it sound like he just thinks he could have done a better job of calling the Patriots cheaters.

Williams is sorry, but only kind of sorry, but everybody can move on now.
