Just days after head coach Jason Garrett gave Rolando McClain the opportunity to win the starting middle linebacker job for the Dallas Cowboys, the former two-time retiree was forced to sit out of practice today due to cramps.

While there is currently no update on McClain’s condition, the cramp likely won’t keep him off the field much longer as he vies for the starting position.

More from Dallas Cowboys

McClain made his presence felt in his preseason debut with the Cowboys this past weekend. Playing against his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, McClain racked up six tackles and a forced fumble against Justin Forsett in the second quarter.

His play was noticed by both Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett, which gave him the chance to get reps with the first team during practice earlier in the week. If McClain is able to suit up tomorrow and continue to impress in practice, he could potentially be the starting linebacker by Week 1.

As for quarterback Tony Romo, the Cowboys kept him off the practice field as he continues to recover from offseason back surgery. The Cowboys have been keeping Romo on a strict schedule to ensure he does not injure his back any further, but does get the crucial reps that he and his team need.

As the season inches ever closer, Romo will get more and more reps until he is 100 percent ready and healthy for Week 1 of the NFL season.
