The Boston Red Sox locked down Cuban prospect Rusney Castillo this week and are working on making their $72.5 million deal with him official.

More from MLB

After the first wave of sensational Cuban prospects in baseball like Yasiel Puig, Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Abreu, the Red Sox jumped on the Castillo band wagon and are paying him a massive salary as a result.

According to Ken Rosenthal from FOX Sports, the Red Sox have an opt out clause in Castillo’s deal that would allow him to test free agency in 2019 — a year before his contract is officially up.

Boston likely won’t be losing Castillo in 2019, but there’s a chance that he could decide to test free agency if things go south with the team. That being said 2019 is a ways away and while Castillo could be great, there will come a time when this bubble pops and one of the big contracts a team hands out to a Cuban star ends up being a bad one.

The Red Sox are just hoping that streak doesn’t end with them.
