Scott had five birdies on his front nine Friday and only two on the back nine including a bogey. Tringale had six birdies total but had a bogey and double bogey on 12. Trailing the leaders at seven under par are Americans Kevin Chappell, Brendon Todd and Jim Furyk.
After Rory McIlroy’s tough first round 74, he bounced back with a six under round 65 that put him at three under par for the tournament.
Rickie Fowler started in the hunt with a first round 68, but went two over par Friday to 53rd place.
Other notables include Bubba Watson at four under par, Ernie Els at six under par, Jordan Spieth at two under par and Sergio Garcia at three under par.
Tringale seems to be receiving some good karma for his play the past two days after he retroactively confessed to a scorecard error in the PGA Championship last week and asked to be disqualified. Now, Tringale is leading the first round of the PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs where the winner gains 2,500 tour points and will inevitably jump into the top 5 or higher.
Former world number one, Adam Scott has finished first in only one event this year, the Crowne Plaza Invitational, but has finished in the top 10 in the Memorial Tournament, U.S. Open, British Open and Bridgestone Invitational.
Tringale and Scott tee off at 1:55 p.m. ET Saturday at The Barclays.
