Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton could be in danger of missing the team’s season-opener if his rib injury does not heal as quickly as expected.

According to Steve Reed of the Associated Press, Newton suffered a fractured rib in the Panthers’ Week 3 meeting in the NFL preseason against the New England Patriots.

The good news, however, is that Panthers head coach Ron Rivera expects Newton to be available for the season-opener  — though he will miss the preseason finale this weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

More information on the injury will be passed along for available, but the hairline fracture does not seem to be a major concern for the team at this time.

Carolina kicks off their regular season on Sept. 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.
