The Carolina Panthers cut ties this offseason with one of the faces of their organization when they let veteran wide receiver Steve Smith go. The Baltimore Ravens were more than happy to scoop up the savvy veteran, and Smith explained that leaving Carolina lit a fire under him to be the best he has ever been this season.

While it is certainly hard to believe that Smith could eclipse his career best numbers this season, last night’s preseason game against the Washington Redskins showed fans around the country that Smith still has a lot left in the gas tank.
In limited play, Smith hauled in six receptions for 80 yards and one spectacular touchdown. If you missed Smith’s sensational diving touchdown, check that out right here.
After the game, head coach John Harbaugh could not have enough praise for Smith.
“That [was] kind of vintage Steve Smith,” John Harbaugh told the Baltimore Ravens website last night. “It was great to see that. Smith was arguably the best player on the field.”
Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco also praised Smith’s performance last night as well.
“Steve is a great player and I think you saw a little bit of everything tonight,” Flacco said. “He catches the ball great. When he gets to it, he catches. He runs with the ball well because he’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s quick, he’s fast. He can break tackles. We’re getting on the same page every day. There’s a reason he’s been in the league as long as he has and it’s because he goes out there and fights every day.”
With both Flacco and Harbaugh happy with Smith’s output thus far, you can expect a hefty workload for the veteran this regular season. Who knows? Maybe Smith really can have his best season yet.
