Sean Gilbert, a 12 year NFL veteran with the Rams, Redskins, Panthers, and Raiders, is planning on taking a shot at heading the NFL Players Association. Current NFLPA head De Maurice Smith‘s job is up for a vote in March, and Gilbert is gunning for the job.

Gilbert released his 23-plank “platform” on Tuesday. First of all, he wants to terminate the current collective bargaining agreement. He believes that the owners are colluding against players, and he says he has proof. Stay tuned.
He also wants an 18-game NFL season, which has been talked about a lot in the recent past. It would increase revenue league-wide, and Gilbert outlines what he would do with some of the extra money in his platform.
He is also proposing a $1 million minimum salary for everyone, which is way up from the $420k rookie minimum of 2014.
His new platform would keep rookies from getting a raw deal. Gilbert wants all rookie contracts to be three years, preventing them from being locked into long-term low paying deals if they turn into stars.
There is also a beef with the current franchise designation. Gilbert wants to limit the time a player can be franchised to one. That would seem to be the fair thing to do, right?
Gilbert also wants to expand the NFL rosters from 53 to 57 slots, creating 224 extra “jobs”.
The veterans are also being thrown a bone in Gilbert’s proposal. He wants all fine money to be given to needy retired players.
While all of these ideas seem great, this is politics, after all. Gilbert has great ideas, but how much power and money can he actually wrest from Roger Goodell and the owners?
Something tells me that the players want to find out. He points out a lot of things that will hit home for many players, not just the veterans.
