Two weeks ago the New England Patriots beefed up their defensive line by trading a reported late-round pick to the Green Bay Packers for former second-round draft pick Jerel Worthy.

More from Green Bay Packers

On Saturday, the Patriots will reportedly trim that beef from their D-line by releasing Worthy as one of their pre-deadline roster cuts.

Details of the original trade are not clear, but it’s possible the Patriots gave up only a conditional pick to acquire Worthy, in which case they would lose nothing by letting Worthy go.

After dominating at Michigan State, Worthy has now washed out of two highly-respected organizations in less than a month. That doesn’t bode well for his future in the NFL, though I imagine there’s probably a defensive line-needy team out there that will still give him a look.

Injuries played a part in Worthy’s downfall, but there have always been concerns about Worthy’s work ethic and attitude as well. Second round picks with only two years in the league aren’t given up on this readily by good organizations unless there are extenuating circumstances.

The Patriots have been making a lot of noise with their moves lately, especially the one where they traded Logan Mankins to the Buccaneers. This one won’t make quite as many waves, but it is noteworthy nevertheless, if only because it involves a man who was once good enough to go in the second round.
