The Carolina Panthers are already seeing a return on their 28th pick in this year’s draft. Rookie Kelvin Benjamin, a wide receiver out of Florida State, became an opening day starter because he had a strong training camp.

More from Carolina Panthers

Benjamin is making the most of his opportunity, even without his usual quarterback, Cam Newton. Backup Derek Anderson has still found Benjamin open a few times though. He has six catches for 92 yards and this ridiculous touchdown grab.

This catch put the Panthers up 17-0 with 14:53 remaining.

It was set up by another Josh McCown interception. Both of the interceptions that he has thrown today have resulted in touchdown drives for the Panthers.

Benjamin’s outstanding first NFL action has Panther fans very optimistic about what will happen when Cam Newton gets on the same field as him.

The Panthers lost a horde of wide receivers in the offseason in Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn, and Domenik Hixon.

While Benjamin might not be making the Panther faithful forget about Smith, who is the franchise’s leading receiver, he does look like more than a suitable replacement.

Benjamin may or may not be a star in this league, but he definitely fit the bill in his first game!
