The Miami Marlins are trying to make sure they aren’t as terrible as they’ve been lately for much longer, and part of that means locking up players in big contracts so they don’t spurn the team in free agency.

More from Miami Marlins

Right now the biggest player in this category is All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, and it’s looking like he’ll be in Miami for a very long time to come.

According to Bob Nightengale from USA Today Sports, the Marlins are planning on offering Nightengale the most lucrative contract in team history this winter.

"The Marlins plan to offer MVP candidate Giancarlo Stanton the most lucrative contract in franchise history. Even if they can’t reach an agreement on a long-term contract extension this winter, the Marlins insist they will keep Stanton through at least the 2015 season, vowing to build a championship club around him."

This seems to put to rest any rumors about Stanton being traded, as that was the hot topic back at the deadline but has since become a bit of a non-issue. He’s not going to be signed and traded this winter and the Marlins clearly have designs on making him the centerpiece of their franchise for a very long time.
