Pedro Alvarez has stress reaction in left foot
By Ed Carroll
The Pittsburgh Pirates got some bad news with Pedro Alvarez’s injury diagnosis, and the third baseman will likely miss the rest of the season with a stress reaction in his left foot, the season is in September:
It appears Alvarez is out for the season, as the four-t0-six-week window easily puts him past the regular season, and makes the postseason questionable, assuming the Pirates were to qualify. The 27-year-old third baseman finishes the season with 18 home runs, and slashed .231/.312/.405 in 398 at bats.

Originally diagnosed as a foot sprain, Alvarez injured his foot on August 26 and attempted to play after resting it. He pinch-hit on September 5, and struck out in his only at bat, but the foot was still bothering Alvarez so he returned to Pittsburgh for tests, which showed the stress reaction.
It’s an unfortunate ending to Alvarez’s season, as he was starting to hit better before the original foot injury, including three home runs over his four games prior to being shut down. Alvarez is eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter, and it’s unclear what effect the injury will have on the team’s plans for third base.
