There is still two weeks of baseball left in the Major League Baseball season. Even still, the San Francisco Giants played their most important game of the season, at least to date, when they took the field for their rubber match against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

More from Los Angeles Dodgers

From the Giants’ perspective, there was just one major problem: Clayton Kershaw was on the mound for the Dodgers. Like so many teams before them this season, San Francisco was unable to get anything going against Kershaw and lost by a final score of 4-2.

En route to winning his 19th game of the season, Kershaw was his usual dominant self: the presumed NL Cy Young award winner went eight innings, struck out nine hitters, and surrendered just two earned runs. After those eight innings of work, Kershaw handed things over to closer Kenley Jansen as the Dodgers held on for a key victory and stretched their lead in the division to 3.0 games over the Giants.

Yusmeiro Petit deserves full credit for his starting effort for the Giants, as he went toe-to-toe with Kershaw: Petit pitched seven innings, allowing just three earned runs and striking out eight hitters of his own. Ultimately Kershaw was too much for him and the Giants, which is nothing to be ashamed of the way things have gone this season.
