San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is taking his annual visit to the medical ward so it’s time to see who the Chargers dug up as a backup running back. This year the primary recipient of an added workload appears to be Donald Brown, who got a vote of confidence from coach Mike McCoy.

“Donald’s played a ton of football,” McCoy said per ESPN.com. “The number of snaps he got in Indy, in a very similar system when he was with Peyton [Manning], so coming here we knew exactly what he could do. So he played a lot of football, and we’ve got a lot of confidence in him.”

Brown signed a three-year deal worth a hair over $10 million in the offseason so it stands to reason the Chargers want to get some bang for their buck. Between him and Danny Woodhead, the team should have production covered at the running back position, which is wise given that a Ryan Mathews injury should come as a surprise to exactly no one.

The Chargers will need all the running support they can get as they travel to Buffalo in Week 3 to play a Bills team that has allowed three touchdowns in two games thus far. For now anyways, it appears Donald Brown will be the man counted on to alleviate Buffalo’s fierce pass rush with a good dose of running success.
