Despite not playing much down the stretch of last season, Miami Heat head coach remained positive about Greg Oden’s progress as he returned to the NBA. Speaking about it after the season, Spoelstra called it among the best stories of the season.

During the offseason, however, Oden hasn’t been involved in anything quite as positive. Oden was recetly arrested and charged with a series of domestic abuse-related offenses, putting his NBA comeback on hold for the time being. However, according to Michael Wallace of ESPN.com

Oden is currently a free agent. After the arrest it seemed the Heat moved on from him, but executives with two teams were optimistic about the former No. 1 overall pick.

"“Oden saw playing time against last season both said they believe the center, in the right system, could build on his initial steps with the Heat.[Oden’s agent] Conley Sr. said Oden continues to work out but is not focused on his career at the moment. He would not say if any teams have called to inquire about Oden in the weeks since the arrest.”"

It still doesn’t look like Oden will land with a team any time soon. After pleading not guilty, Oden’s trial has been delayed until November. But right now that is the least of his concerns.

Domestic abuse has become a large issue in the sports world, with Oden and Ray Rice standing out among a series of other cases. It is an important issue that these leagues and players need to address and do their best to stop. This is the rare time that off-the-court issues rightfully trump what’s going on between the side lines.
