Dominique Wilkins’ statue is ready

When it was announced that Dominique Wilkins was getting a statue, there were no arguments against. A statue is the least the Atlanta Hawks can do after unceremoniously trading Nique, causing a wound in the fanbase that they still haven’t fully recovered from. He’s the greatest player to play in Atlanta, for a franchise that has been for the most part unsuccessful.

UPDATE: Nique deleted the tweet, but we grabbed a screenshot of the art for the statue. Take a look:

The statue looks amazing. Those old Hawks jerseys are some of the best throwbacks in NBA history, with the dash across the front, and one solid color throughout the rest of the uniform. It’s captured perfectly with a goldish color on the dash and logos, leaving bronze to cover the rest of the statue. Fans of the retro style will also enjoy the short shorts Nique is sporting in the statue. While I think most NBA fans are glad those won’t be making a comeback, they give a nice classic feel to the statue, reminding us how long it’s been since Nique was shaking rims with his dramatic windmill dunks.

While the statue is great, I have one small complaint. The dunk form, while cool, should be a two handed windmill. Everybody remembers when he did that in the dunk contest against Jordan, it needs to be immortalized once more, in the form of statue. That complaint aside, the statue is great, and I can’t wait for the unveiling.
