Adrian Peterson’s journey through the NFL PR ringer has been a crazy one over the last 72 hours. He has gone from inactive to having the Minnesota Vikings stand behind him and then announce that he was put on the NFL’s exempt list just 47 minutes in to Wednesday.

The Vikings released a statement early on Wednesday morning announcing that Peterson would now be placed on the NFL commissioners exempt list and would not return to the team or the league until the legal process had played out.

It seemed like a crazy reversal of course for the Vikings, who were steadfastly standing behind a decision to play Peterson on this upcoming Sunday.

However, it appears that this reversal of fortune may have had the blessing of Peterson himself.

As Make points out, the long-term nature of Peterson being placed on this exempt list had to come with Peterson’s consent, as is required under the CBA for anything beyond three games.

Peterson will still be getting paid his full salary while he deals with the legal system and charges of felony abuse to a child.

The Vikings received heavy pressure to sit Peterson, with local sponsor Radisson Hotels suspending sponsorship and national sponsorAnheuser-Busch being vocal about pulling support if Peterson continued to play.
