According to azcentral.com, this isn’t the first time Chapman has stolen from the store in Scottsdale, having allegedly stolen on seven separate occasions the last few months.
"Apple Store employees told police that Chapman picked up items in the store and made it appear that he was paying for them using a self-checkout system via iPhone app. He would then leave the store without actually paying for the items, they said.Chapman allegedly took the items to a local pawn shop and sold them for cash, according to Sgt. Mark Clark, a Scottsdale police spokesman. The store’s estimated loss is more than $14,000."
Chapman is facing nine felony counts of organized retail theft and five counts of trafficking in stolen property. Workers at the store alerted police to the thefts and were able to identify Chapman due to his status as a former basketball player in Arizona.
According to his basketball-reference.com page, Chapman made more than $22 million during his time in the NBA, playing for the Charlotte Hornets, Washington Bullets, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns between 1988 and 2002. He averaged 14.6 points, 2.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game for his career.
