The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still tryig to get their heads to stop spinning after the 56-points shellacking the Atlanta Falcons put on them this past Thursday. It was a loss so bad that the Bucs might have broken Thursday Night Football, but that’s a different issue.

The main issue the Buccaneers are concerned with at the moment is getting better and that means finding a way to ensure Pro Bowl leader Gerald McCoy isn’t lost in free agency this summer. His rookie deal is almost up, and that means a new deal needs to be struck int he near future for Bucs fans to stop fretting about the possibility of losing him to another team.

According to Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports, the Bucs being so terrible and having virtually no one of talent or stature on roster will likely result in them throwing gobs of money — money they indeed have — at McCoy in the form of an extension.

"The Bucs don’t have anyone to whom they still owe big chunks of money. They have about $30M in cap space next season and roughly $58M for 2016 projections, sources said, and have almost no players with big signing bonuses, either. So their cap prorations on their best players are manageable and all are essentially on year-to-year deals and easily released without cash or cap ramifications."

McCoy is without a doubt the Buccaneers best player and the face of their franchise the same way Warren Sapp was for the Dungy/Gruden teams of the late 90s and early 2000s. He’s the only guy on the Bucs roster that absolutely needs to stay, and while nothing probably could have helped the team on Thursday Night, McCoy’s absence in the middle was noticeable.

Hopefully for the Bucs, that’s not an absence that becomes permanent in 2015.
