Carolina Panthers vs. Baltimore Ravens

This is Steven Smith 2.0 versus the team that shunned him; the Carolina Panthers are headed to Baltimore to take on the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday in an attempt to improve from their 2-1 record. The Ravens have the same record to improve upon, though, and a nation watching their every move- this Sunday isn’t a game that either team is going to take lightly.

Keys to victory

The Baltimore Ravens are still scrambling to make up for the loss of Ray Rice on their offense, and it’s no walk in the park to keep your game face on while in the midst of a national scandal. The Ravens are a strong enough squad to bulldoze through the judging stares, though; if the team’s QB continues to be- well, at least an average first string QB- the team will do just fine. This game has Steven Smith Sr. bringing his own personal drama to the front lines, which hopefully means that he’ll make a big impact on Sunday.

Conversely, the Carolina Panthers will need to rely on a consistent defense and Cam Newton to amp up the intensity in order to pull ahead in this game. I have plenty of confidence in Newton- he brought my fantasy team much father than it should have gone last season, considering how badly I managed it. He has yet to throw an interception in the two games he’s played this season, sitting pretty with a 99.4 passer rating. (Let’s compare that to Romo. Sorry, Dallas fans.) As Bobby Agnese of Cat Crave pointed out, though, every proven running back on his squad is injured- he’s going to have to have to carry more of the offensive load than normal in this game.

Betting Odds

Prediction

I’m a firm believer that blood is thicker than Gatorade, and I lived in Baltimore for like fifteen seconds when I was a child, so I have an unnecessary bias towards the Ravens. That being said, I also think that this is their game to lose. Steven Smith is probably already entering beast mode just thinking about the game, and the Panthers proved last week that they aren’t one of those teams that can ignore an injured squad. If Baltimore can channel Smith’s vengeful firepower for success rather than disaster, and Carolina looks like they did last weekend, this could be a curb-stomping.

Final Score: CAR 14, BAL 38
