As in the NFL, there is a huge difference in the outlook of fantasy football teams after week four if they are 3-1 (frontrunners), 2-2 (in the hunt), or 1-3 (longshots).  It’s a big separation week especially when you consider all the teams on bye weeks.  It’s going to take some really fantasy skill to get a win this week, and in this post, we’ll focus on making sure you have the right QB to start week 4.

More from Fantasy Football

This week’s a turbulent one for fantasy QB’s with Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, and Andy Dalton all among the six teams on their bye week.  With those three typical top-20 QB’s out of the picture, there would have been some new names toward the bottom of the list regardless, but there are also three QB’s slated to make their first start of the year this week. Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater get the first starts of their NFL careers, and Mike Glennon will be back under center for the Bucs after Josh McCown’s injury.

With the turnover at the position in the last two weeks, the emergence of Kirk Cousins, and a few games to get an idea of each team’s quality of secondary, starter rankings can be very helpful as you decide what QB to start.

Here are the top 20 quarterbacks to start week 4 with the top ten here and the next ten on the following slide:

Drew Brees. 1. player. 15. Brees has been steady but not spectacular so far this season, but with Peyton on a bye and Aaron Rodgers struggling, Brees takes the top spot in our rankings as he takes on the Cowboys in Dallas.  The Cowboys secondary has struggled in general and specifically with the tight end, so expect Brees to Graham to be a straight money connection this week making Brees the best QB start of the week.. New Orleans Saints. Week 4 @ Cowboys

Detroit Lions. Week 4 @ Jets. Matthew Stafford. 2. player. 50. Stafford had three turnovers and no touchdowns against the Packers, but the Lions still managed to get a big home win over their division rivals.  This week, he’ll be asked to carry the offense since the Jets usually shut down opponents running games while leaving their secondary exposed.  New York has allowed the fourth-most points to opposing QB’s making Stafford a high-end QB1 this week even though he’s on the road and outdoors.

13. Rivers is a great start this week rising to his highest point in the rankings as he and the Chargers host the Jaguars. The Jags have already allowed 1,000 yards passing and have been demolished the last two weeks by Kirk Cousins and Andrew Luck.  Rivers could also be throwing more than usual since the Chargers running back situation has been decimated by injury after losing both Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead in the last two weeks.  . San Diego Chargers. Week 4 vs Jaguars. Philip Rivers. 3. player

Week 4 @ Bears. Aaron Rodgers. 4. player. 49. Rodgers has struggled in the Packers two previous road games and only put up strong numbers in the Pack’s come from behind win against the Jets.  This week, heading to Soldier Field won’t be easy.  I still think there’s potential for a monster game from Rodgers to show he’s still an elite option, but he has not been as much of a lock as he usually seems to be which is why he drops a few slots in this week’s rankings.. Green Bay Packers

Indianapolis Colts. Week 4 vs Titans. Andrew Luck. 5. player. 46. Luck has been on a roll since a rough first half opening week in Denver.  The last two weeks he has lit up the Eagles and Jaguars and has nine passing touchdowns in his last five halves. He’ll find it much tougher going this week against the Titans solid pass defense.  He’s still a top-5 option, but his numbers will probably come down from their lofty heights at least a little bit.

44. Ryan has dominated in two home games while struggling outdoors on the road in Cincinnati week 2. This week should give us an idea if that bad game was just an outlier or a trend to watch for from the re-emerging QB1 option.  Minnesota should be a team he can beat after giving up the most points to opposing QB’s in 2013, but the Vikings secondary has been much better in the opening weeks of 2014 and actually limited Drew Brees last week in New Orleans.. Atlanta Falcons. Week 4 @ Vikings. Matt Ryan. 6. player

54. Remember the first half against Jacksonville when everyone was ready to leave Foles on the side of the road and all the anti-Foles prognosticators were crowing about it on twitter?  Well, he’s bounced back quite nicely and is emerging as an every-week QB1.  Last week he led his team to a gutty win at home over the Redskins and continues to earn respect across the league.  This week he’s in a tough matchup as the Eagles fly west to take on the 49ers which is why he’s this low on the list for this week.. Philadelphia Eagles. Week 4 @ 49ers. Nick Foles. 7. player

Chicago Bears. Week vs Packers. Jay Cutler. 8. player. 57. Cutler has put up 15+ points in all three games in ESPN standard scoring. He’s thrown multiple touchdowns in every game this year and is quickly finding his way in Marc Trestman’s offense.  Cutler has elite weapons and will look to use them effectively again this week as the Packers come to town.  It should be a great NFC North game, but with both defenses ailing could be higher scoring than many of the meetings between these teams in the past.  Cutler has a rough history against Green Bay, but he’ definitely a QB1 this week since he has some positive momentum.

123. Romo and the Cowboys could be about to ride into a shootout with the Saints on Sunday.  Romo has been better at home than on the road, and led the Cowboys back from a 21-0 defecit lst week. He’s bounced back nicely from a rought week 1, and I think he’ll have a good game this week as he tries to keep up with Drew Brees and the Saints.. Dallas Cowboys. Week 4 vs Saints. Tony Romo. 9. player

10. player. 42. Kaepernick threw a ton against a tough Cardinals secondary with mixed results.  He completed 29 of his 37 attempts but only for 245 yards and one touchdown.  He did add 54 yards on the ground which helped his owners, to be sure, but it’s hard to know what to expect from him on a weekly basis since his play has been uneven. The Eagles secondary is surely beatable as Kirk Cousins proved last week, so Kap’s owners will hope he can fins similar success this week against the Eagles and get the Niners their first win in their home stadium.   . San Francisco 49ers. Week 4 vs Eagles. Colin Kaepernick
