The NHL preseason is almost over, meaning we’re about to be able to start caring about the final score of games again (no, but really).

While everyone loves to use the “oh, but it’s just pre-season” excuse, though, certain teams are still finding the three weeks before October 8th’s puck drop to be more than a little concerning. Including, it seems, the Colorado Avalanche.

  • The team has yet to win a pre-season matchup, falling to the Anaheim Ducks and Montreal Canadiens twice apiece and the Calgary Flames once. Of those five losses, only one was in OT: and one was a 4-0 shutout.

This could mean absolutely nothing. The year that the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup, they had only walked away from the preseason with one victory. After all, the multi-game series is played primarily to figure out rosters; many players who appear on the ice the most during these matchups are reassigned before the first regular season game is even played. Losing a number of games prior to the first official puck drop could simply mean that your farm system doesn’t quite stack up yet- and that has very little to do with where your team will end up eighty-two games later.

For a team absolutely ravenous for a Stanley Cup, though, the squad should have walked away with at least one victory to their names. Big names such as Nathan MacKinnon and Ryan O’Reilly have appeared on the ice over the course of the pre-season… yet, they haven’t been able to seal the deal and bring home a win.

The team has three games left to play- the second of a two-game face-off against the Calgary Flames will be played on September 30th, and the Avs will round off their pre-season play with two final games against the Los Angeles Kings. Let’s hope the squad can collect themselves before then- or it could be a rough year in Colorado.
